Maintenance Worker (MW1)

Reports To: Highway Superintendent / Assistant Highway Superintendent
Location: Lake Zurich, IL
Status: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Pay: $27.64 – $37.32/hour

Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker I (MW1) is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance, construction, and repair of Township roads, drainage systems, and related infrastructure. This position involves safely operating heavy and light equipment, performing manual labor, and ensuring all work is completed efficiently, safely, and to Township standards.

Supervision

  • Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Highway Superintendent or Assistant Highway Superintendent.
  • Supervision Scope: Work is performed with limited supervision; may involve independent judgment and initiative in safely operating equipment and completing assigned projects. The position is subject to review and evaluation according to the Township’s personnel policies.

Job Environment

  • Work is primarily performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Exposure to loud noise, moving vehicles, dust, fumes, and other hazards associated with construction and road maintenance.
  • Frequent operation of heavy/light trucks, construction and maintenance equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Regular interaction with other department staff, contractors, and occasionally the general public,

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform road construction, maintenance, and repair work, including:
    • Grading, paving, and patching asphalt and gravel roads
    • Installing and repairing drainage systems, manholes, and catch basins
    • Clearing brush, mowing roadside areas, and maintaining ditches
    • Repairing signs, guardrails, and other roadway infrastructure
  • Operate heavy and light equipment, including:
    • Front-end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, tractors, rollers, and trucks
    • Snowplows and salt spreaders for winter maintenance
  • Conduct routine maintenance and basic repairs on vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal, including on-call emergency response 24/7 during weather events.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
  • Follow proper safety procedures and Township policies at all times.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required.

Schedule

  • Regular Hours: Monday–Thursday, 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM; Friday, 6:30 AM – 12:30 PM (40 hours/week, ½-hour lunch).
  • Emergency Availability: Required to be available for callouts during inclement weather or emergencies (24/7 as needed).

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in public works, construction, or maintenance involving heavy equipment operation including field safety
  • Mechanical repair experience highly desirable.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must reside within 40 minutes of Lake Zurich, IL for emergency response requirements.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid CDL Class B required at time of hire with ability to obtain CDL Class A with tanker and air brake endorsements within one (1) year of hire.
  • Enrollment in the Township’s DOT Drug and Alcohol Program required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge:
    • Public works construction, maintenance, and safety practices
    • Operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Skills:
    • Equipment operation, mechanical aptitude, and tool use
    • Welding and/or electrical experience a plus
  • Abilities:
    • Perform heavy manual labor in adverse weather conditions
    • Follow verbal and written instructions
    • Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers
    • Work cooperatively as part of a team
    • Follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions/rules

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and operating equipment.
  • Must be able to access construction sites, traverse uneven terrain, and enter/exit Township vehicles.
  • Requires manual dexterity and stamina to perform physically demanding work safely.
